For those of you out there who are unfamiliar with illScarlett and for those of you who absolutely can’t wait for the show, here’s a video of the band performing their single Nothing Special to tide you over.
There is much more that comes along with being the Vice President of Campus Life than just planning and implementing events. The position is really what you make out of it; your commitment to your students and to the HSF vision is what will drive you to be more than the ‘go to’ person for events. Personally, I not only run events, but I sit on many committees, answer student questions and concerns even if it does not have regard to events, I have involvement with the College Student Alliance and help manage clubs on campus, but ultimately being aleader that can follow the direction of the Humber Students. This position holds importance to giving students their best campus life during their year. Students depend on this executive to give them that memorable year they have been looking for before they either graduate or their beginning to post secondary life.
The first step in being a great leader is the ability to listen and to feel what students want and the ability to be inclusive as much as possible. Being a student executive is not a right but a privilege which is given to you by your peers and it is your responsibility to give them what they deserve.
The ability to work well with a team, and understand the structure and the job descriptions pertaining to your distinct position is vital.Being the VP of Campus Life is awesome because you get to see your ideas unfold and the feedback from students always makes you feel like you accomplished something. This position requires you to be yourself and to be very interactive with your students. When you get ideas for events, as crazy as they might sound, try to work with it and make it happen…there’s nothing better than the feeling that you did something good for someone who took the time to give you feedback.Remember that you yourself are also a student, so when it comes to events and who would like it, don’t second guess yourself because there is no one who would know better than yourself!
Last but certainly not least….HAVE FUN! Having a fun personality is contagious and it spreads!
For all those who are running for my position…remember that you are all potential leaders and no matter if you get the position or not, never give up on striving to be your best!
P.S. EXPERIENCE is what you get when you don’t get what you wanted!

As the election season kicks into high gear, I face the upcoming campaigning with mixed feelings. For one, I am so thrilled to see the excitement and energy build around the elections. I am excited for the different and creative campaigns that each candidate will come up with. On the other hand, I will be sad to leave a place that has become so much a second home for me in the past year as an Executive, and the previous year as a part-time staff.Over the past year, HSF has become more than just where I work; it has become a place I truly look forward to going each and every day. My co-workers have become my friends and each day I learn something new about the college, about my job, and also, about myself.
Very quickly I realized that Vice President of Administration is a position based on service. It’s the opportunity to bring different services on campus and the chance to improve services that already exist. It’s also about being able to serve students in order to help them along their post-secondary journey.
A large part of my job is the various committees I sit on. On these committees I represent the voice of the students, and I can assure you that there is no better venue to have your voice heard. One of the most extraordinary things I have noticed through working with these committees is the dedication that Humber’s own admin have to the college, and most importantly to the students.
By no means is this job easy, and if I could advise the new candidates on one thing it would be this: be prepared to work for it. Be prepared to campaign your butts off. Be prepared to have busy schedules. Be prepared for the most interesting and rewarding job you could ask for. Be prepared for a unique experience and a brilliant opportunity.
The world is yours.
May the best candidate win.
