There is much more that comes along with being the Vice President of Campus Life than just planning and implementing events. The position is really what you make out of it; your commitment to your students and to the HSF vision is what will drive you to be more than the ‘go to’ person for events. Personally, I not only run events, but I sit on many committees, answer student questions and concerns even if it does not have regard to events, I have involvement with the College Student Alliance and help manage clubs on campus, but ultimately being a leader that can follow the direction of the Humber Students. This position holds importance to giving students their best campus life during their year. Students depend on this executive to give them that memorable year they have been looking for before they either graduate or their beginning to post secondary life.
The first step in being a great leader is the ability to listen and to feel what students want and the ability to be inclusive as much as possible. Being a student executive is not a right but a privilege which is given to you by your peers and it is your responsibility to give them what they deserve.
The ability to work well with a team, and understand the structure and the job descriptions pertaining to your distinct position is vital. Being the VP of Campus Life is awesome because you get to see your ideas unfold and the feedback from students always makes you feel like you accomplished something. This position requires you to be yourself and to be very interactive with your students. When you get ideas for events, as crazy as they might sound, try to work with it and make it happen…there’s nothing better than the feeling that you did something good for someone who took the time to give you feedback. Remember that you yourself are also a student, so when it comes to events and who would like it, don’t second guess yourself because there is no one who would know better than yourself!
Last but certainly not least….HAVE FUN! Having a fun personality is contagious and it spreads!
For all those who are running for my position…remember that you are all potential leaders and no matter if you get the position or not, never give up on striving to be your best!
P.S. EXPERIENCE is what you get when you don’t get what you wanted!
Yours Truly,
Aynur Duzgeren
